Swedish bio-energy facility "BIOAGRO Energy" named Best of the Best by the EU Commission.

After many overcome obstacles along the way has seed company Skånefrös bioenergy-factory "BIOAGRO Energy" been awarded theBest of the Best of the EU Commission LIFE+ Environment program out of hundreds of projects operated within the European Union from the years 2005-2007. On the 19th of May, will this be presented in Östra Tommarp in South Sweden.

The project started in 2005 with the challenge for seed company Skånefrö, who wanted to use their biomass waste into something constructive instead of adding them to landfills. Funding was sought by GIA Sweden AB and after approval from the European Commission, the project was financed by the EU eco-development program "LIFE+ Environment". Partners in the project was bio-boiler manufacturer HOTAB and with the project were also companies ÄFAB and Ecoera AB. Many obstacles along the way about technology and development were overcome and finally, December 30, 2009 the facility was completed in Tommarp, Österlen in South Sweden.

BIOAGRO ENERGY is a full-scale bio-energy plant, which now residual biomass - straw, hulls, chaff, residue of the seeds - into a new bioenergy fuel: Bioagropellets™. In addition to this, the facility is a fossil-free and sustainable source of heat for the whole Skånefrö operations and drying processes, and recently a district heating has been connected to supply heat to the surrounding village, Östra Tommarp. Moreover, it also produces biochar that is used as soil amendment - with good results.

This project will now be shown to the public during the launch of "Elmopedturnén" May 19 in Östra Tommarp. Here, the entire project and technology platform will be presented and its future opportunities to contribute to a renewable energy system and climate change mitigation.

Ulf Castenfors, CEO, GIA Sweden AB - Global Incentives Advisor: "It is a great honor for GIA Sweden to have played a part in the proposal and project development of this great project. The fact that BIOAGRO not only received financing but has also been selected as one of the four best LIFE+ projects, from a list of several hundred highly qualified European projects, is a clear demonstration of the BIOAGRO project's inherent value for the EU."

BIOAGRO Energy Österlen AB is a company owned by Skånefrö AB and reliserats by funding from the EU. Skånefrö is a leading provider of high-quality seeds since 1928. Contact BIOAGRO project manager and "Best of the Best" Award: Sven-Olof Bernhoff - 0705-920791

With Elmopedturnén, Pär Holmgren (meteorologist and lecturer) and Staffan Lindberg (CO dieter and artist) have found a different and more inspiring way. By means of entertainment, they spread the knowledge about climate- and sustainability issues. The batteries are fully charged with green energy, humour and knowledge at the 2011 cruise throughout Sweden, from Tommarp 19 May to Haparanda on June 19. The start of the tour will be at BIOAGRO Energy where Pär and Staffan wil hold inspiring lectures and Ecoera will show the latest development around biochar. Welcome at 2 pm!
BIOAGRO Energy Awarded South Sweden Cleantech Award

By showing extraordinary efforts in sustainability outside the day-to-day business, Skånefrö AB and BIOAGRO Energy was awarded the South Sweden Cleantech Award at Malmö Stadium on sept 30th.

The competition was fierce with many high-potantial and hard working companies - all great in their field and nominated for this award.

However, the winner was BIOAGRO Energy with the above average effort where the system is having an even wider impact on the surrounding society by using the locally produced crop residues as well as soon starting to provide the surrounding village Tommarp with BIOAGRO district heating.

Biochar trials

With biochar innovation company, Ecoera AB, biochar trials are now in full process using Bioagropellets(tm) - formula R56 - as source for a biochar high in element such as potassium and phosphorous. The trials have been conducted in South Swedish fields to the BIOAGRO Energy facility and are made on sandy soils with low production output. The trials so far, have shown a good root ingrowth from the Barley, sown.

This is the first large-scale biochar trial in Sweden, and also coupled to carbon sequestration.

News regarding the climate effects of the BIOAGRO system

Waste and by-products transform into energy and reduce Skånefrö’s discharge of carbon dioxide with 540 tonnes a year. In the very south of Sweden, in Tommarp, an EU-project is being in progress, where Skånefrö together with their partner HOTAB exchanges all oil- and electricity heating for a renewable alternative that in addition gives an energy surplus.
This is made in a cooperation with ÄFAB and Chalmers, through the start up-company Ecoera Biofuel Engineering. The BIOAGRO project coordinates research, development, testing and demonstration in a unique interplay where low qualitative products from the agricultural land become useful energy.

“Already today there is a very large unexploited resource of raw materials from the agriculture sector, that hasn’t been fully exploited as an asset for renewable energy.” These words were presented by Sven-Olof Bernhoff, MD of Skånefrö and project leader of the BIOAGRO-project, at a press conference that marked the start of the building, the 2nd of April 2007.
